THE STORY BEHIND EVERY STUDIO TRACK.
Commonly described simply as heavy,
Led Zeppelin’s music was actually a
complex amalgam of blues, rock, folk
and country. Martin Popoff dissect
each of Zep’s 81 studio tracks,
including the circumstances that led
to their creation, the recording
processes and their historical
contexts. Introductory essays for
each album features sidebars listing
studios, release dates and
personnel. Beautifully illustrated
with rare performance and offstage
photography and memorabilia, the
result is a stunning look at the
foursome who forged the template for
the marauding modern rock ‘n’ roll
band.
Folks, this is the gosh-darn
prettiest book I ever got to stick
my name on. It’s hardcover, full
colour throughout on heavy premium
gloss. The cover is weirdly velvety
and makes use of spot varnish and
neon inks. And the dimension is this
odd 7 3/4” x 10” which is... there’s
just something really unique about
it.
But inside, there are tons of
pictures Voyageur Press unearthed
that I’d never seen before, plus
loads of memorabilia shots.
And the bottom line is that ever
last thought I ever had on Zeppelin
has got to be in here, because I
basically had to write a couple of
pages of text on each and every
Zeppelin song. This was pure
hard-graft writing, melding analysis
with hundreds of trivia nuggets,
opinion (some of it not so
complimentary—possibly get in some
trouble here) and obsessive
dissection, which was in truth, so
gratifying to execute ‘cos for years
I wanted to say my piece on
Zeppelin.
Plus, there’s interview footage in
there for a few sidebars, where I’ve
offered quotes from my interviews
with John Paul Jones, Aubrey Powell,
Ron Nevison, the late Andy Johns, a
bit from Robert Plant and a few
other rock stars who tell me why Zep
rules.
